Millions of people each year surf the Internet to find the perfect work-at-home job only to be overwhelmed by the number of scams and work-at-home schemes. One of the first steps to finding a legitimate work-at-home job is to understand what telecommuting is all about. Below are the answers to the top ten telecommuting questions. 1) What is telecommuting? Telecommuting describes the situation in which a person works off-site for all or part of the workweek. In essence, he commutes via telephone or other telecommunication equipment such as a modem. He may telecommute from home, from a satellite location or mobile office. He doesn’t do assembly work, email processing, envelope stuffing, or ad placing. 2) How many people telecommute? The number of telecommuters is difficult to compute. The International Telework Association and Council reports the number of employees who telecommuted at least 1 day per month increased from 23.5 million to 24.1 million in 2004. One of the best places to find these companies is online, but you must beware. While more and more legitimate work-at-home jobs can be found online, so can scams. Here's what you need to know and do if you are looking for a real work-at-home job online. 1) Understand that you aren't going to sign up to work at home. Telecommuting work is found in the same way that traditional work is found and usually involves an application or resume, and interview process. 2) You can't pay to get hired. Any company that says you can work for it by sending some money is not offering a job. Companies looking to save money are setting up home-based employees to help with order taking and support services in record numbers. These companies range in size and scope including airlines, mailorder businesses, and technology companies. The advantage to customer service jobs is that they don't necessarily require experience. That doesn't mean that they don't require skills or equipment. It also doesn't mean you can simply sign up and answer phone calls. But you don't need an advanced degree or years of corporate experience to get hired in customer service. The hours in a customer service job can vary. Some will require full-time work during regular work hours. Most offer part-time hours and some need people to work late shifts and/or weekends. Many will allow a flexible schedule, but most will want its agents to have a set schedule. The pay can vary as well. Some pay as little as $8 an hour while some pay more. If sales is involved some employees will pay commissions and bonuses as well as a set hourly fee. If you have experience in customer service work you're likely to get paid more. Some provide benefits, but most categorize employees as an independent contractor. This has some advantages as an independent contractor is able to deduct work-related expenses such as a new phone headset as well as portions of your home expenses for having a home office. I have to say this always baffles me because every week I wade through thousands of jobs to find a select few to post in my weekly newsletter. The problem I believe is that people look for the wrong jobs in the wrong places. They often limit themselves to jobs like "typing" or "data entry" that are so rare they might as well give up on the idea of working at home. My suggestion to them is to find work in areas that are hiring. There are many companies looking for home-based employees to do work that doesn't necessarily require a great deal of experience or education. So why not go after these jobs? Some people tell me, "I don't anything about these jobs." THAT'S OKAY. Many of these jobs don't require a formal education and some have entry-level positions. Further, several of these jobs pay very well. As long as you're willing to learn and work hard, there are companies ready to hire you. Here are six job types that have hundreds of job openings available now. These jobs are found all over the Internet on job related websites. If you have been searching for a work-at-home job, you have probably run into many of them. Remember, even if you don't know how to do these things now, many are easy to learn and are worth considering. Copywriting: Don't let the word "writing" scare you. You don't need a degree in English to be a copywriter. In fact, some of the most successful copywriters break most rules taught in high school English. The best thing about copywriting is that it can be very lucrative and requires very little in terms of education and experience. In fact, many copywriting experts indicate they earned a fulltime income their first year without having previous experience. Copywriting involves writing promotional materials including ads, brochures, sales letters, press releases, reports, and web site copy. Transcription: The most common form of transcription jobs I find are in medical transcription which usually ask for at least two years experience. However, legal and business transcription are a growing markets. People doing teleseminars are also hiring transcribers to transcribe their talks. Then there is the growing captioning field, which uses transcribers to type the closed captioning on television. You can learn medical and legal transcription through correspondence courses. Or become a general transcriber or captioner by teaching yourself and practicing to improve your speed and accuracy. Translation: The Internet has made the world a smaller place and many companies want to make their website and other materials accessible to people in other countries. If you are fluent (speaking and writing) in more than one language, there are many companies that need your services. Graphic or web design and web programming: Often employers will want a combination of all skills required for these jobs, so I have lumped them together. These jobs do require extensive knowledge and frequently specific software. However, many will take entry-level employees, so if you can get the education, you may be able to get a job. Many community colleges offer courses in these areas. You can check online educational resources as well. Experts in economics talk about "supply and demand". The above jobs are in large supply and are waiting for you to fill the demand. If you take the time to develop your skills, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to find a job in one of these areas. The free job boards and many websites are filled with offers of high paying jobs that turn out to be duds or scams. The first step to any successful work-at-home job search then is to weed out the good offers from the bad. Keep Your Emotions in Check: One of the most important things you can do to avoid work-at-home scams is to not let your emotions get involved. Scammers are brilliant copywriters who are able to use their offers to get you excited about the prospect of paying off debt, being home with children or making tons of money in a short time. They do this because they know buying decisions are made emotionally. Therefore, keep your head in the game. Legitimate jobs don't use hype or promise you the moon because they're not selling anything. Go through the scam check list: If the job asks for money to hire you or wants to sell you its own equipment or software, it's not a job. Other scams to watch out for include envelop stuffing, assembly work, payment processing, any job asking you to use your bank account to help the company do business, email processing, rebate processing, repackaging, and any offer that uses the word "guarantee" in relation to income. Employers don't offer guarantees; they offer a salary or a wage. Read the job description: If you get to the end of the job announcement and you don't know what the job entails, it's likely not a job. Work-at-home job announcements are like traditional job announcements in which the employer gives the job title and description, a list of requirements, and instructions on how to apply. Do your research: Visit the company's website, which should not be hosted on a free site (i.e. company.freehost.com). It should also be professional looking with easy to find contact information. Use a search engine to find information about the company. Type in the company's name along with the word 'scam' to see if anything pops up. Visit quality work-at-home or scam forums to see if anyone has shared experiences with the company. You can check the Better Business Bureau to see if there is any negative feedback and if so how the company responded. However, not all companies are in the Better Business Bureau and not being a member doesn't necessarily mean it’s a scam. Proceed with caution through the process: Sometimes scams don't reveal themselves until you've started the application process. So take each step with care. Don't give your social security or other information that can be used to steal your identity during the hiring process (employers will eventually need your social security number, but not until they actually hire you). If you're asked for money for anything besides a criminal history check, walk away. You should never have to give payment information for a job. Work at home jobs are just like traditional jobs, so if during your job search process you're asked to do or provide something a traditional employer wouldn't ask for, stop the process and assess.
